From the Hacker News discussion
It makes sense actually. The imaginary world in the matrix trilogy is inspired from the unix hacker folklore [1]. So if you're a hacker, it's not surprising that what's on your screen looks like what's on the screens in the Matrix. [1] as shown here [VIDEO]
Read original comment ↗> This started before Mr. Robot. Think Tron: Legacy. Think The Matrix: [VIDEO] Using nmap to find a vulnerable ssh server for the SSH CRC32 attack.
Read original comment ↗Oh, I don't know about Matrix. You get to see[1] Trinity determine a vulnerable SSH is running, using nmap, only to then exploit it to get #. [1] [VIDEO]
Read original comment ↗Didn't know this but yup: [VIDEO] - scene from The Matrix Reloaded where Trinity uses nmap and sshnuke. Looks like there's a re-creation of the on-screen display here: [LINK] but the typing is faster than in the movie. Also, the Jurassic Park scene to which you're referring was a real picture of SGI IRIX's 3D file manager. It was visual fluff, but functional visual fluff.
Read original comment ↗While I completely agree with you, as a very minor point, The Matrix Reloaded features Trinity correctly using nmap to find an exposed SSH server, and then correctly using SSHNuke to exploit an era-appropriate CRC vuln -- [VIDEO]
Read original comment ↗Here is the scene, your link is a little hard to see what it's trying to show, but great reference: [VIDEO] this looks plausible enough.
